Lower School Highlights
• Through Mindfulness practices and our partnership with the Center for Resilience, our Lower School students have the tools to pause, take a breath, observe, and move forward with more self-awareness and understanding of their relationships with others.
• Implementing Responsive Classroom routines and activities, Preschool-Grade 5 students, led by our 5th grade students, gather as an entire Lower School, as well as in daily classroom groups, for Morning Meetings. There they personally greet each other, share experiences, discuss current events, review the schedule for the day, and participate in a team-building activity. Such a routine fosters a sense of community, develops character traits, and promotes the development of listening and public speaking skills.
• A highlight of our academic year is World Cultures Week, a week devoted to immersing our Lower and Middle School faculty and students in the study of a specific country and its culture. During this time, our traditional daily schedules are altered as teachers from all grades and disciplines collaborate to bring an interdisciplinary focus to a variety of topics. Within flexible groups and through multisensory learning experiences, the history, geography, music, arts, religion, food, people, games, architecture, and literature of the particular country are studied. Guest speakers and performances, as well as a buffet lunch, further enhance the flavor of the country and culture.
• School-wide Strategic Plan initiatives support our ongoing efforts to expand our curriculum and provide our students with the most well-rounded education possible. Global Education, S.T.E.A.M., and Essential Curriculum (Social-Emotional Learning, Diversity, Health & Wellness) are integrated into our students’ learning experience through stimulating, appropriately challenging and fun activities and projects.
