Music is an integral part of the Lower School curriculum. Our philosophy of music education is rooted in the belief that musically educated students develop their aesthetic potential to the fullest when they increase their ability to derive satisfaction from the music of all cultures. This is accomplished through fostering an increased awareness of both the commonalities and differences that exist between musical styles and genres. A strong choral program is the foundation of our program, where students learn about music by being musicians.
Members of Raindrops (Kindergarten to Grade 2) and Puddles (Grades 3-5) learn basic music and vocal skills. Healthy vocal production, tone quality, ensemble singing skills and performance etiquette are developed in an encouraging atmosphere with age-appropriate music. Students are involved in age appropriate music and activities designed to challenge their singing and listening skills, and ignite their imaginations to explore how the elements of music can help them express themselves. In addition, band is offered to Grade 5, giving our students a wide variety of musical experiences throughout their Lower School years. At times, the children may sing at outside events such PawSox and Providence Friars basketball games.
The Wave is a choral ensemble designed to build on the skills introduced in the Lower School. At the Middle School level, students learn proper vocal technique, music reading and sight singing skills, as well as the discipline of singing with musicality, movement, and expression. Singers are offered numerous performance opportunities to exhibit the diverse repertoire reflecting the multicultural mission of the Rocky Hill School Choral Program.
With the use of various technological tools, such as Garage Band®, the students will also have the opportunity to investigate how music is constructed as they experiment with their own creative compositions.
Narragansett Sound is a choral ensemble designed to take a young singer from his/her first introduction to the art of choral singing through a full course of choral instruction. This program includes the study and development of choral artistry, vocal technique, music history, and performing style as pertaining to the repertoire studied and performed. The goals of this ensemble are to develop the musical talents of our singers and to provide the ensemble with high caliber musical experiences while singing a diverse repertoire at performances both on and off campus.
