Rocky Hill School is please to announce Mike Gwaltney of Portland, OR as the new Head of Upper School beginning July 1, 2017. Mr. Gwaltney earned both his B.A. in History and his M.S. in Education from California State University at Fullerton. He taught for 25 years in Los Angeles prior to moving to Oregon Episcopal School in Portland, Oregon, a PK-12 school where he serves as an Upper School teacher and department chair.
Considered an expert in project-based and online learning, Mr. Gwaltney is a strong advocate for engaged local, global, and digital citizenship who is published and has presented at various conferences around the world, including OESIS, ISTE, and NAIS. He has worked as an independent consultant since 2010 and currently serves as a consultant with Independent School Management. Mr. Gwaltney has held many school leadership positions, served on several volunteer boards, coached soccer, and been honored on multiple occasions with Inspirational/Outstanding Teacher Awards and Coach of the Year Awards during his impressive career.
Mr. Gwaltney’s expertise in blended learning and 21st century authentic educational experiences for students, along with his commitment to the humanities, will serve the Rocky Hill School community well. The faculty and administration of Rocky Hill School are pleased to welcome him to the Upper School where innovation and a student-centered approach to teaching have long been a hallmark of excellence.
