Boys' Varsity Lacrosse - Defending SENE Division II Champions

RECORD:  7 - 4

Coach: Ben Bartlett

Assistant Coach: Joe Truncellito

Captains: Tim Harsch, Ben LeBlanc

Boys' Varsity Lacrosse vs. Falmouth       Won:  9 - 5

The Boys' Varsity Lacrosse team got an opening day win over long-time rival Falmouth Academy. Freshman sensations Tory Dumas and Servi Barrientos had outstanding offensive games and scored more than half of the team's goals to secure the victory. Co-captain Ben LeBlanc got off to a great start also by contributing two goals in the victory. The other players who got into the scoring parade were Barrett Cavanagh and Rob Goldstein who each contributed with one goal apiece.

Boys' Varsity Lacrosse vs. Hyde       Lost 4 - 10

Despite enthusiastic efforts from the entire team, the Mariners lost on the road to a strong and talented Hyde squad.  Specifically, the team did mount something of a comeback in the 2nd quarter, after falling behind 4-1 in the 1st , to close the deficit to two goals at the half [5-3].  Unfortunately, 2nd half penalties quickly extinguished any hope to build on this positive momentum, especially since it paved the way for the opportunistic Hyde man-up offense to rally with another five goals to win convincingly.  On a positive note, senior tri-captain, Ben LeBlanc, added another two goals and one assist to the effort; Junior tri-captain, Jared Carr, netted another for the Mariners; and Barrett Cavanagh picked up his second goal of the season.  The all-senior defense played determinedly as they saw much action in their end, while Brendan Schultz and Gray Twombly shared goal tending duties.

Boys' Varsity Lacrosse vs. St. Thomas More       Won:  13 - 5

Though the Mariners jumped out to a commanding lead, 7-3, in the 1st half, the team put together an even better overall effort in the 2nd half to win most convincingly, 13-5.  Behind particularly strong performances from Ben LeBlanc (4 goals, 1 assist), Barrett Cavanagh (3 goals, 1 assist), Jared Carr (2 goals, 1 assist) and Tory Dumas (2 goals, 1 assist), the offense capitalized quite successfully on many opportunities that came its way during this contest.  While suffering a major loss to the team roster due to Hudson Hackett's shoulder injury, the Mariners must regroup and forge ahead in their preparation for next Monday's match-up against The Bancroft School.

Boys' Varsity Lacrosse vs. Bancroft       Lost 2 - 14

While hampered by some key injuries, the Mariners were simply outmatched by a talented squad from Bancroft School.  After jumping out to a quick 2-1 lead in the 1st quarter behind scoring from Adam Swist and Ben LeBlanc, Rocky Hill was effectively shut down by its non-league opponent.  Despite great goal-tending from senior Gray Twombly (20 saves on the day), Bancroft's offense exploded for 13 unanswered tallies during the remainder of the game.  Looking ahead, the Mariners look to regain their winning ways with back-to-back games on Thursday and Friday versus Williams and Boston Trinity, respectively.

Boys' Varsity Lacrosse vs. Williams      Lost 1 - 9

Rocky Hill met their match against a strong and talented squad from Williams School.  While the final score did demonstrate the host's productive offense; it failed to reveal the strong goalie performances for both sides, as each posted twenty saves on the day.  Frustrating as it was to be beaten so soundly, the Mariners can take pride in how well they kept their composure throughout the game, receiving high praise from both officials after the game for their notable effort and overall good sportsmanship.

Boys' Varsity Lacrosse vs. Boston Trinity       Won  14 - 1

The Mariners bounced back with a convincing win over Boston Trinity to wrap up a tough week on a positive note.  Rocky Hill's offense exploded with nine different players contributing to the overall scoring.  Specifically, Tory Dumas [3 goals], Jordan Farrales [2 goals], Jared Carr [2 goals], Ben LeBlanc [1 goal and 2 assists], Anthony DonFrancesco [1 goal and 1 assist], Nate Fleming [1 goal], Adam Swist [1 goal], Rob Goldstein [1 goal], and Servi Barrientos [1 goal] tallied points for the Mariners.  Please stay tuned as the next two weeks are busy with six regular season games to play before the SENE playoffs begin.

Boys' Varsity Lacrosse vs. St. Andrew's    Won  7 - 0

The Mariners took command of this game from the first face-off, rotating in all players regularly as a result.  Once again, Ben LeBlanc [3 goals, 1 assist] and Tory Dumas [2 goals, 2 assists]  led the team's offense. Anthony DonFrancesco and Jared Carr both added a goal, while Phil Twombly, Adam Swist, and Servi Barrientos picked up an assist in the effort.  Defensively, Rocky Hill shut down St. Andrew's completely as Gray Twombly and Brendan Schultz teamed up to preserve a shut out on the day.

Boys' Varsity Lacrosse vs. Cape Cod      Won  11 - 5

This Mariners core played their best and most complete game of lacrosse this season versus Cape Cod Academy.  After an excellent effort in the 1st half, Rocky Hill bore down to dominate CCA both on the field and the scoreboard.  Specifically, Ben LeBlanc [4 goals, 3 assists], Barrett Cavanagh [3 goals], Tory Dumas [2 goals, 1 assist], Nate Fleming [1 goal, 2 assists], Servi Barrientos [1 goal, 1 assist], and Tim Harsch [1 assist] contributed to the scoring. Hopefully, we can keep it rolling against Falmouth Academy on Friday.

Boys' Varsity Lacrosse vs. Falmouth      Won  8 - 5

Despite penalty troubles in the 1st half, these Mariners played with much pride and poise in all aspects of the game.  Once again, Ben LeBlanc and Barrett Cavanagh led our offense, both with 3 goals and 1 assist, while Jared Carr [also with 1 assist] and Nate Fleming each tallied one for Rocky Hill.  On defense, seniors Tim Harsch, Andrew Brown, Chris Cardano, Troy Dumas, and Gray Twombly stepped up with a huge effort to shut down the Falmouth Academy offense, whether playing in a “man-down” or “even” formation.  Next week, the Mariners face another busy schedule as they finish up with three important league match-ups against St. Thomas More, St. Andrew's, and Hyde en route to the SENE playoffs.

Boys' Varsity Lacrosse vs. St. Thomas More       Forfeit (L)

Although we soundly defeated the team from St. Thomas More by a score of 13-4, with Barrett Cavanagh lighting up the net for team-leading 6 goals, a coaching miscue forced the Mariners to forfeit the contest to this league rival.

Boys' Varsity Lacrosse vs. St. Andrew's      Won  15 - 0

Boys' Varsity traveled to St. Andrew's on Wednesday and played an all around team game. Improved senior leadership, seriousness of purpose, and a total team effort led to this win. Eight different players scored goals and the defense backed by Brendan Schultz's 9 saves, recorded a shutout in this late season league contest. I was proud of the way the team handled the recent distractions and injuries, and felt that they took great steps forward in building stronger character, both as a team and as individuals.

SENE TOURNAMENT

Boys' Varsity Lacrosse vs. Falmouth      Won  13 - 6

After giving up three quick goals, these Mariners collected themselves on defense and woke up their offense to tally eight unanswered goals before the end of the 1st half. Rocky Hill added five more goals in the second half as Falmouth scored several times in the waning minutes. Leading this offensive barrage were Jared Carr [4 goals, 1assist], Ben LeBlanc [3 goals, 1 assist], Barrett Cavanagh and Servi Barrientos [both with 2 goals], and Nate Fleming and Andrei Hanzel with one tally. This well-seasoned Mariner defense once again stepped up with a huge performance to stifle most of our guests' offensive efforts after its initial lapse in the first two minutes. Advancing to the SENE finals this Wednesday, Rocky Hill looks forward to playing a “complete” game against the league-leading Hyde School.

Boys' Varsity Lacrosse vs. Hyde       Lost 6 - 18

Plain and simple, Hyde beat Rocky Hill in the SENE finals, 18-6.  All things considered, the Mariners can be tremendously proud of their overall team effort to match up against this all-around better squad.  The Rocky Hill offense was led by Barrett Cavanagh [3 goals], Ben LeBlanc [2 goals] and Nate Fleming
[1 goal].  Undoubtedly, this has been a great season for this band of Mariners.

Boys' Junior Varsity Lacrosse

RECORD:  3 - 1 -1

Coach: Andy Washburn

Boys' Junior Varsity Lacrosse vs. Marionapolis     Tied:  3 - 3

Boys' JV Lacrosse ended with a 3-3 tie vs. Marionapolis on April 19th. As this was our first game of the season, I felt that we had a very successful outing against a bigger, older team who were playing in their 3 rd contest. After a slow start, the team gained confidence throughout the afternoon and played their best lacrosse into the second half. Down by a goal in the final minutes, we were able to tie the score on a great assist from the wing for a clean shot past the Marionapolis goalkeeper. Our team dominated the final sequences, but we were unable to put that winning goal in the net. All three goals were scored off brilliant assists, as this team continues last year's tradition of teamwork and unselfish play. We left the field proud of our performance, disappointed in a tie, but hungry for more practice, the next game, and the chance for a win.

Boys' Junior Varsity Lacrosse vs. St. Thomas More     Won:  11 - 1

After giving up an early goal in the first two minutes of the game, the team reeled-off 11 unanswered goals to produce a well-played victory at St. Thomas More on Tuesday, May 1st. The squad showed great improvement in skills and passing over their previous contest and certainly played as a team. Eight different players scored, and 9 of the 11 goals came directly off assists from teammates, proving the unselfishness and growing maturity of this team. Once again, the game was approached in a mature and serious manner as the team traveled, mentally prepared, and ran through its pregame warm-ups. We still need to learn how to physically, get off to a better start, as we can not afford to give up early goals, but the energy, aggressiveness and level of play continued to improve right through to the end of the contest. This team continues to show its love of playing the game and they seems to be more satisfied by their level of play, than by the final result.

Boys' Junior Varsity Lacrosse vs. Marionapolis     Lost:  3 - 7

Traveling to Marionapolis, the JV Lax team responded with not nearly as good an outing as we wanted for a game that we felt was winnable. We started out slow and quickly fell behind by three goals after the first quarter. After a stirring time-out speech, the team responded with a bit more energy in the second quarter and played an even match throughout the remainder of the contest. We never did play up to our potential, and I hope, learned a valuable lesson about showing up to compete every day. We will take this set back as a learning experience and hopefully be more mentally and physically prepared for our next contest.

Boys' Junior Varsity Lacrosse vs. St. Thomas More     Won:  6 - 1

This JV Lacrosse game rematch versus St. Thomas More was played on 5/11. We finally got off to a good start in a game, scoring first and played the entire game with good focus, energy, and improved skill. Teamwork again played a role as we scored four of the six goals off of assists from teammates generally stationed behind the goal. The team responded nicely from Wednesday's loss with spirited play and enthusiasm, and was pleased about their effort and result. It is fun to win, but better to have played well, and thus deserving of the win.

Boys' Junior Varsity Lacrosse vs. Falmouth     Won:  4 - 3

The team traveled to Falmouth for a spirited contest on the Cape and returned with a close win against and evenly matched Falmouth squad. As a team, we all agreed that we did not play up to our potential, but rode the outstanding hustle and scoring of Ivan Robertson as he played an aggressive full field game, scoring three goals and leading the team in energy and enthusiasm. Again with only two players on the bench the majority of the team played extended minutes and had to continue to work hard when tired and banged up. We were thankful when the final horn ended the game, and we could repack the bus for the trip back to Rhode Island.

Varsity Sailing

RECORD:  1 - 4

Coach:   Kathleen Tocke

Assistant Coach: Dave MacMillan

Captain:   Courtney Lada

Coed Varsity Sailing vs. Moses Brown     Lost:  0 - 3

The RHS sailing team opened up their season with a tough loss to a strong Moses Brown team. Courtney Lada and Sarah Wineberg sailed an excellent event winning the 2nd race and posing a threat to the leading Moses Brown boats.

Coed Varsity Sailing vs. Portsmouth Abbey     Lost:  0 - 3

Our sailing meet against Portsmouth Abbey proved to be a valuable learning experience for our students, as we were able to use the lessons learned in that meet prepare for Westerly. As coaches, we were extremely pleased with the sportsmanship and upbeat attitude our sailors displayed despite difficult sailing conditions, and the fact that they were competing against much more experienced sailors. It is always great as a coach to witness this conduct by your team, and to have them seek advice for improvement after a tough loss.

Coed Varsity Sailing vs. Westerly High School     Won:  3 - 1

The Mariners won our sailing meet against Westerly High School by a score of 3-1  Courtney Lada and Sarah Wineberg did a superior job, taking the lead in three of the four races and controlling their opponents at all times, Campbell Walker and Walmen Dumaliang also gave commendable performances in the heavy-air. This was our first home meet for the year with new sails!

Coed Varsity Sailing vs. Bay View     Lost:  2 - 3

Rocky Hill lost a close one against Bay View Academy, although it was evident that the meet could have gone either way. With Courtney Lada and Sarah Wineberg winning each race, we clearly had the speed to upset Bay View. However, our team was facing much more experienced sailors, and the teams of Rudy Lapin Normann/Dan Ratigan and Campbell Walker/Walmen Dumaliang should be commended for testing the talented Bay View sailors. We are excited about our progress, and confident about the team's potential for success at the RI State Championships.

Coed Varsity Sailing vs. Hendricken     Lost:  2 - 3

Despite a 3-2 loss against Hendricken on Friday May 4, the Rocky Hill sailing team put forth one of its finest performances in nearly 3 years, against one of the top sailing teams in New England. As coaches, we are extremely pleased with the mental toughness and improvement that our sailors displayed against Hendricken, and expect that our team is well prepared for the RI State Champs. The teams of Courtney Lada/ Sarah Wineberg, Rudy Lapin-Normann/ Dan Ratigan, and Campbell Walker/ Walmen Dumaliang should be proud of their performances.

Boys' Middle School B Team Lacrosse

RECORD:  0 - 4

Coach:  Blue Wheeler

Boys' MS B Lacrosse vs. Gordon    Lost: 4 - 5

The Boys' B Lacrosse team played a great first game.  Andrew Nota won the prize for the best goal.  After navigating around numerous defenders, he skillfully placed the ball in the upper right hand corner.  Lucas Berg our goalie who is new to the sport, played a great game in goal.  The final score was 5 to 4 with Gordon beating RHS by a small margin.

Boys' MS B Lacrosse vs. St. Michael's   Lost: 4 - 6

The B Lacrosse team had the best game of the 2007 season on Tuesday against St. Michael's.  It was an excellent game in which Lucas Berg, our faithful goalie, stole the show.  He made numerous amazing saves that kept the game tight.  In the end, we were out played and lost by two.  Nic had the goal of the game after he navigated through numerous defenders.  A great game was played by all.

Boys' MS B Lacrosse vs. Wheeler    Lost: 3 - 5

The Boys' B team played a great game against Wheeler on Thursday.  We lost in points, but played a great game all over the field.  Again, Lucas Berg played an outstanding game in net and, with the help of Dakota Bennett from the A team, our defense was the strongest I have seen it.

Boys' MS B Lacrosse vs. Pine Point    Lost: 1 - 7

The Boys' B team played Pine Point on Monday.  The team, armed with only two subs, played a good game, but lost to the hands of a bigger more experienced team.  With the final score of 7-1, we have a number of things to work on.
