JANUARY
2008
Student artwork
will be displayed at the Hera Gallery in Wakefield during their
Annual Children's and Young Adults' Art Exhibition. Featured RHS
artists: Lilly Esposito '09, Sarah Knowles '08, Max Hall '09, Hannah
Knowles '08 and Sarah Wineberg '09. The exhibit runs from February
2nd - March 1st with an opening on Saturday, February 2nd from 6:00-8:00
PM.
Ana Bartlett '09 is going
to be modeling in NYC during February Fashion Week, which takes
place the first week of February (1st-8th).
Jordan Ashton '11 has been
accepted to participate in the 2008
US Scholar Athlete Games for baseball. Jordan is a lefty pitcher
and received a full scholarship to the program, which will take
place June 28-July 5 at the University of Rhode Island.

Fifth grade students, Jim Stevens and Jenn Schwechheimer, won the
North Kingstown foul shooting contest for their age group. It looks
like we have some future basketball all-stars!

Normann '09 who was selected to play flute in the URI Honors Band.
We are pleased to report
that our third contingent of RHS students and faculty will travel
to Hattiesburg, MS to help with the rebuilding efforts after Hurricane
Katrina. The team will work with Habitat for Humanity and spend
one week of their March break lending a hand.
8th graders Jamie Antignano
and Laura DeBlois participated in the National Young Leaders State
Conference in Boston over the holiday break. They took part in experiential
activities designed to enhance and nourish their existing leadership
skills while challenging themselves to acquire new ones.
Congratulations to Shail
Patel '09 who recently earned the honor of Eagle Scout, The Boy
Scouts of America's highest achievement.
Junior Walmen Dumaliang has
an incredible journey planned for February. He will travel to London
with other members of Youth United for Global Action and Awareness
(YUGA) for a workshop focused on global poverty. YUGA is a nationwide
organization whose goal is to "promote global unity, understanding
and change through awareness, action, and connection with other
young people from around the world."
DECEMBER
2007
Hannah
Knowles `08 (Field Hockey), Sarah Knowles `08 (Field Hockey),
and Ted Broderick `08 (Soccer), have been selected as finalists
for the Rhode Island Sports Award, sponsored by Cox Communications.
This award is based on athletic and academic achievement as well
as service to the community. Winners will be announced in June.
The Mock Trial Team won their
first trial against Smithfield High School. The team of legal eagles
are off to a great start!
Congratulations to Johanna
Lynch `11 who was selected for the SENE Girls' All-League Cross
Country Team for 2007.
The RHS Math Team won their
second meet in the West Bay Division of the RI Math League. The
team defeated both East Greenwich and Toll Gate High Schools. Dennis
Wu `10 was the high scorer with 13 points. Steve Tilley `08, Walter
Filkins `08, Shail Patel `09, Sam LeBlanc `10, Maki Tazawa `10,
Hannah Gardner `09, and JungA Jang `08 also scored for the team.
Jordan Ashton `11 auditioned
on guitar for the Junior All-State Jazz Ensemble and not only was
accepted to the ensemble, but also was ranked an impressive 2nd
in the state. Bravo!
Dennis Wu '10 has been selected
to represent RHS at the Rhode Island Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership
Program seminar this May. Students participate in unique leadership
training, service-learning and motivation-building experiences with
other sophomores from throughout the state.
Kudos to Barrett Cavanagh
`08 who was nominated for the National Association of Secondary
School Principals, 2007 Principal's Leadership Award. Barrett will
compete with seniors from across the nation for state, regional,
and national scholarship awards. The nomination was based on Barrett's
exemplary academic performance, leadership and community involvement.

On December 2nd, Rocky Hill
School competed in the first Certamen of the year. Over 80 students
participated, and Rocky Hill School placed 2nd in all 3 divisions.
- In second place in the Cives division was the team of David
Catanzaro `11, Danny Waterman `11, Yin Yefko `12, and Jamie Antignano
`12.
- In second place in the Quaestor Division was the team of Alec
Petros `10, Ayodele Samuel `10, Miriam Fitzelle-Jones `10, and
Ian Sutcliffe `10.
- In second place in the Consul Division was the team of Sam
Sardelli `08, Sam LeBlanc `10, Chris LaMantia `09, and Jess Waterman
`09.

Kudos to the entire cast
and crew of THE KATRINA PROJECT: Hell and High Water .
Many thanks to the students and art teachers who created the amazing
artwork, including ceramic bowls that were auctioned the night of
the play and dinner. We also thank The Fish Market who provided
the meal at a very generous discount. In total, the school raised
over $1,700 for The Katrina Project.
A big applause goes out to
the Boys' Soccer team who represented our school so well in the
semifinals of the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council
tournament. The team lost a tough game to Watkinson School with
a score of 4-1. Patrick Mellor `08 scored the goal for RHS, and
Steven Sparhawk `08 recorded 12 saves.
Congratulations to Jamie
Antignano `12, who was selected again this year to perform in New
York City at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Jamie was selected
from performers all over the world to dance and sing in the parade.
Her performance was titled, Making Magic. Great job Jamie!

Students in the Upper School
staged a "Dress-Up Day" for a good cause. For "permission"
to dress-up for the day (vs. dressing down), participants made a
donation to support the victims of the California wildfires. They
raised over $350, which was matched by Mr. Young and another donor
as well. In all, over $1,000 was contributed and the students never
looked better!
Karissa Kist `13 made the
RI Olympic Soccer Development Team. This is her 2nd year making
the team.
Kassandra Kist `07 made the
Women's Soccer Team at Muhlenberg College and scored her first goal
in her first game!

`08 were each selected for RIIL's All-Tournament Team for Field
Hockey.
OCTOBER
2007
Congratulations to the Lady
Mariners on the field hockey team. They defeated a tough Warwick
Vets team to claim the first victory in the RIIL Division II quarterfinals.
The RHS Math Team won its
meet yesterday, scoring 49 points to East Greenwich 's 29 and Toll
Gates' 18. All of the team members (Steve Tilley `08, Walter Filkins
`08, Shail Patel `09, Sam LeBlanc `10, and Dennis Wu `10) scored
points, and Dennis Wu scored a perfect 18 points.
Taylor Publishing has selected
The Crest 2007 as a Yearbook semi-finalist. Only 15% of the more
than 7,500 yearbooks they publish receive this recognition. While
Taylor Publishing has been our yearbook publisher for almost two
decades, this is the first time that we have been honored in this
way.
Hayley Greene '11 and Emily
Klochkoff '11 will be performing in Island Moving Company and Newport
Academy of Ballet's production of the Newport Nutcracker,
November 23-30 at Rosecliffe. Ticket information is available at

Iona Ross `10 won her division
in the Kayleigh Raposa Memorial 5K at Colt State Park this past
weekend. She was 19th overall of all runners, men & women, with
a time of 20.43 minutes over the 3.1 mile course. There were 198
competitors in the race.
The Rocky Hill Physics Team,
Captain Dennis Wu `10, Steve Tilley `08, Sam Leblanc `10 and Walter
Filkins `08, placed first
in the balance competition at the 10th Annual Physics Olympiad.
The Institute for International
Sport, administrators of National Sportsmanship Day, has named Rocky
Hill a 2007-08 All-American Sportsmanship School . RHS is one of
12 schools (3 high schools) in the nation to receive this honor.
The Institute noted, "The 2007-08 honorees are made up of a
group of schools ranging from elementary schools to universities
that have all clearly demonstrated a well thought out sportsmanship
program in their respective schools, which has resulted in an admirable
commitment to and practice of sportsmanship." MORE

Jesse Chase-Lubitz `12 will
be in the Festival Ballet's performance of Cinderella
on October 19-21 and in the Festival Ballet performance of The
Nutcracker on December 14-16.
SEPTEMBER
2007
Brava to Lily Hanlon '13,
who was selected as a flutist for the Rhode Island Philharmonic
Youth Wind Ensemble. She will perform in several concerts this school
year and she will be traveling to Washington, DC next summer to
perform at several locales, including the WWII Memorial, Alexandria
Market Square, and The Armed Forces Retirement Home.
Congratulations to Anna
Yamada '13, whose U-12 Girls' soccer team completed an undefeated
season in the RI Youth Super Liga Anchor Division and won the 2007
Soccer RI Cup State Championship.
Chelsey Frost '10 attended
a 10-day conference in Washington, DC with The National Young Leaders
Conference during the summer. She attended model congress meetings,
toured all of the Capitol Hill sites, met with our senators, and
studied all of the different branches of government.
Alana Corwin '08 was recently
accepted to Trinity Rep's GTECH Theatre Ambassador program. As an
ambassador, Alana will work around the theatre, attend rehearsals,
performances, and post-performance discussions, and participate
in workshops led by Trinity Rep actors and directors.
Natalie Cotta `11 was accepted
into the Johns Hopkins University CTY Talent Search for gifted and
talented students.
JUNE
2007
On June 3rd, Daniel Ratigan
'10 and Dennis Wu '10, members of the RHS Robotics Team, competed
at Boston University in a Robotics/Engineering design competition.
There were 53 total teams participating in the event. After four
preliminary rounds of competition, the RHS team was in 12th place
and qualified for the semi-final competition. During the semi-final
round, the RHS team was defeated by a mere two points.
Sarah Knowles '08 was recently
honored as a Girls' Lacrosse Academic All American for Rhode Island
by US Lacrosse. She is one of fifteen girls in the state to receive
this high honor.
Amelia '14, Daniel '18, and
Michael '12 Caramadre received a proclamation from Providence Mayor
David Cicillini at a Big Brothers event last week. They are the
youngest recipients of a citation in the history of Cicillini's
"mayorship" and were given the honor in recognition of
their concern for others and philanthropic spirit. Together, they
purchased 1,000 copies of a CD by singer/positive rapper James McBride
that will be distributed to Providence school children.
Daniel Sack '10 represented
Rocky Hill last weekend at the START Youth Leadership Conference
held at Nichols College in Dudley, MA.
Kudos go out to Hannah Knowles
'08 who won the Cox RI Sports Award for Girls' Lacrosse. She was
the only junior nominated in her sport and one of only three girls
selected statewide. This award is based on athletic and academic
achievement and community service.

Senior Michael Marchak
is performing in the role of Mark with the Academy Players in A
Chorus Line this weekend. For information, go to www.academy

Congratulations to Senior Nate Fleming who had his first news articled
published in the East Greenwich Pendulum. He is interning
there for his Senior Project.
The Puddles and
Narragansett Sound choral groups sang the National Anthem
at the PawSox game on Mother's Day.
Tim Jeon ‘11 traveled to
Texas last week to participate in a National Math Counts Competition,
after winning the top Math Counts award for all 8th grade students
in Rhode Island. He placed in the top twenty out of 200 participants.
Xiaotian Wu (Dennis) ‘10
and Jovanne Jean-Francois ‘08 won medals of excellence at a recent
adjudicated music festival. The festival is sponsored by the RI
Music Educators Association, and attended by many talented students
throughout the state. Jovanne performed a cello solo and Dennis
performed a piano solo for which he received a perfect score.
Seniors made their Senior
Project presentations to their classmates and faculty. This year's
class had an impressive list of internships and truly made a month
that is typically wrought with senioritis and true learning and
growing experience. Caroline Perry worked on the set of CNN in New
York . Elise Flanagan also traveled to the Big Apple where she interned
at Donna Karan NY.
Rocky Hill hosted the RI
Women's State Sailing Championship this week. Fourteen area high
school teams competed in the regatta. Congratulations to the teams
of Courtney Lada '07, Sarah Wineberg ‘09, Karolyn Jackson ‘09, and
Emily McNeil '08, who represented RHS well.
The Girls' Lacrosse team
won the semifinal match-up against Hyde to earn a spot in the finals
against PCD. The girls lost a close one (5 - 8), but played a great
game. Congratulations on a fine season!
April
2007
Rocky Hill School has
been given top honors by the Providence Chamber of Commerce. The
School was selected as a recipient of the Exemplary Worksite Health
Award for our outstanding wellness programs for
our employees and school community.
Lily Hanlon '13 has been
recommended to try out for the Rhode Island Philharmonic Youth Wind
Ensemble as a flautist. She will be playing "Serenade of the
Blessed Spirits" from Orpheus for her solo try out. If she
is chosen, Lily will perform in venues including VMA Arts &
Cultural Center , Rhodes-on-the-Pawtuxet and Providence College
.
The Robotics Team competed
at the Trinity College Firefighting Robot Competition. Rocky Hill
was the only RI school at any level to compete at this international
event, and the only all-freshmen team. In our division, we ended
up placing 14th out of the 22 teams.
Troy Dumas '07 won first
place, and received a six-foot trophy in sparring this weekend.
He competed against other 16-17 year olds from all over North America
at the Ocean State Grand National Karate tournament held in Warwick.
At the recent Certamen
competition, the Rocky Hill team of Daniel Sack '10, Jessica Waterman
'09, Chris LaMantia '09, and Yiwan Zhou '07 earned an impressive
second place finish. Lincoln, Barrington, Classical, Wheeler, and
Rocky Hill comprised a field, which showed off their knowledge of
Latin and Greek in the ultimate quiz bowl for young classicists!
The Rocky Hill Math Team
placed 8th in the New England Small School Division. Tim Jeon '11
led the way with a score of 15 points (missing one problem); Shail
Patel '09, Dennis Wu '10, Sam LeBlanc '10 and Dan Sack '10 also
scored points.
The Rocky Hill Upper School
Mock Trial Team lost a tough trial in their quarter final round
against Wheeler's B team. Of the three Wheeler teams, the "B"
team was the only one to make it to the quarterfinals. It was a
very close trial.
Rocky Hill Latin students
from the 7th-12th grade took the National Latin Exam. The efforts
of our young classicists have, once again, yielded highly impressive
results. Students who earned top honors this year are as follows:

Nicole Morin '15 took
first place at the Rhode Island State Gymnastics Meet for Level
4. There were 132 girls in the competition. Nicole's All-Around
score was 38.00 and she won the award for having the highest event
score, a 9.60 on beam.

Amee Amin `07, Jaclyn
Pellegrini `07, Sara Leonard `07, Jacqueline Weixel `08, Tim Papa
`08, Bakh Baidaralin `08, and Chris Cardano '07 spent one week of
Spring Break in Hattiesburg , MS helping build homes with Habitat
for Humanity as part of the Hurricane Katrina relief effort. This
was the second school-sponsored trip to work with Habitat for Humanity.
The students were featured on the local news in Hattiesburg and
here at home on NBC.
The Mock Trial Team and
RHS Math Team are both ranked number five in the state heading into
April's playoffs.
The Middle School MathCounts
Team placed 4th in the state for the second year in a row, out of
more than 30 teams. Tim Jeon '11 was the top student in the state
for the second year and will compete at the national competition
in Ft. Worth, TX. Tim received the highest score in the state on
the 2006 AMC 8 (American Mathematics Competitions) Contest, qualified
for the American Invitational Mathematics Examination given by the
AMC and was selected to be a contestant for the competition, “Who
Wants to Be a Mathematician,” hosted by the American Mathematical
Society, the worldwide professional organization of research mathematicians.
Tim Jeon ‘11 placed second at the "Who Wants to Be a Mathematician"
contest at Providence College. He was the only eighth grader who
participated.
JZ Perrotta '07 won the
State Scholastic Chess Championship held at RIC this past Saturday.
He will be the state representative at the Denker National High
School Chess Championship in July (only one rep per state).
Bak Baidaralin '08 won
a gold medal for the interview portion of the Academic Decathlon
held in March.
Last weekend, Anna Yamada
‘13 raced at Sunday River in the final World Cup series of the downhill
race. She finished first and ended the season in first place.
The RHS Math Team won
the division meet against East Greenwich, Toll Gate and West Warwick
. They have won the division for the year, and will be in the state
playoffs on April 4th at Cranston West High School. Tim Jeon ‘11
was again our high scorer with 15 points. His 69 points for the
year (out of a possible 72) set a new school record. Steven Tilley
‘08 had 14 points, and Dennis Wu ‘10 had 12.

Davis-Allison ‘07, who was named to the Second Team SENE All-League
Basketball Team. Steven Sparhawk ‘08 and Sarah Pontarelli '08 both
received an Honorable Mention.
The Girls' JV Basketball
Team took 3rd place in the PCD Invitational last week, and Sam Angell
was named to the All Tournament Team.
Kathryn Barrall '12 will
play "Lovey" in the All Children's Theatre production
of Charlotte 's Web. Performances are March 10th, 11th,
17th and 18th at the Vartan Gregorian School in Providence.
Another Brava! to Ella
Myette '14 and the Jump! Dance Company for three sold out performances
this past weekend at the Carriage House Theater in Providence.
Anna Yamada ‘13 completed
her age group Alpine ski racing competition for 2006-2007 season.
Out of 42 racers in her age group, she finished 15th in the MARA
(Maine Alpine Racing Association) standing.
Congratulations to TJ
Carley ‘15, Cora Geunes '16 and Holly Hood ‘16 and Matthew Hood
‘19 who all swam in the South Eastern New England Cluster of Y's
(SENECY) Championships this past weekend. The Kent County Sea Otters
were recognized as the overall champions for 2007. This is a wonderful
end to a successful season for the team.
Rudy Lapin Normann '09
will be among the USA competitors in an international speed skating
event, the Trophée des Tres Pistes in April. Eleven countries
will be represented and the championship will take place in several
venues throughout France.
February
2007
The Mock Trial Team competed
against Tiverton High School (undefeated for 5 years) this week
and took command of the courtroom. Our lawyers were Yiwan Zhou '07,
Barrett Cavanagh '08, and Hyerim Shin '07. Our witnesses were played
by Dan Sack '10, Whitman Littlefield '07, and Kevin Stevick '09.
Congratulations to the team on their second consecutive win!
Anna and Brenner Yamada
each had a busy weekend racing on the slopes. Brenner `09 raced
in a Junior 1 & 2 (age 15 – 18) race at Shawnee Peak and finished
32nd out of 56 racers. Anna `13 raced both Saturday and Sunday.
On Saturday, at the Sunday River World Cup race, she came in 1st
in her age group; on Sunday, she raced at Mt. Abram for MARA (Maine
Alpine Racing Association) and came in 9th out of 44 competitors.
January
2007
On Sunday, January 21st,
Chelsey Frost '10 represented Rocky Hill in the Bayview Invitational
swim meet. She placed 5th in the 50 Free (out of 105 swimmers),
and 10th in the 100 Free (out of 91 swimmers). She also placed Rocky
Hill 19th out of 26 by herself. Swimmers represented high schools
from throughout Rhode Island and Southern Massachusetts. Both Chelsey
and Katie McGinnis ‘09 have qualified for the state meet on February
17 and 18 and will represent Rocky Hill.
The Math Team won their
division at the meet this past Wednesday. They far outscored competitive
teams like East Greenwich and Toll Gate with a score of 61. The
next closest team score was 51, and Tim Jeon '11, the 8th Grade
student in the competition, has maintained his perfect score 27/27.
Congratulations to Joey
DiBiase '12 who played in the Christmas Holiday Hockey Tournament
in Cranston. His team won the Tournament and Joey was awarded the
MVP for the Tournament after posting three shutouts and two games
allowing only one goal.
December
2006
Read Frost '16 was selected
to the New England Top Ten Swimmer's list for 2006. He swam one
of the ten fastest times of the year in 8 and under boys division.

Filippelli `16 whose cheerleading squad came in first place at a
recent competition.
The Rocky Hill Certamen
Team, comprised of both Middle and Upper School Latin students (and
one French student), competed in their first Certamen competition.
Quaestores (Intermediate) team of Sam LeBlanc '10, Jessica Waterman
'09, and Dan Sack '10 finished 2nd in their division.
The RHS Math Team defeated
East Greenwich High School, Toll Gate, and West Warwick in the West
Bay Division of the RI Math League. Hyerim Shin '07 and Tim Jeon
'11 had perfect scores, and Patricia Capuano '07 and Steve Tilley
'08 had near-perfect scores. Several other RHS students did well.
We had a perfect score on the Geometry round.

Barrall `12, who will play the role of Julianne in the All Children's
Theatre production of Madeline's Christmas, which will
be held on December 2nd, 3rd, 9th and 16th at the Vartan Gregorian
School Theatre in Providence.
Hannah Gardner `09 will
represent Rocky Hill at the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY)
conference in June. HOBY provides lifelong leadership development
opportunities that empower individuals to achieve their highest
potential. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to network
and build important leadership skills.
Congratulations to Jamie
Antignano `12, who was selected to perform in New York City in last
week's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Jamie was one of
600 children, ages 10 – 16, who were selected from all over the
world to dance and sing in the opening number for the parade on
Thanksgiving Day. She had to rehearse for six days in NYC with her
fellow performers.
Ben LeBlanc `07 auditioned
and was accepted to the RI Senior All-State Band, and Alec Petros
`09 auditioned and was accepted to the RI Junior All-State Band.
This is an honor and these are very selective groups – great job!

2006
Dennis Wu `10, Dan Sack
`10, Dan Ratigan `10 and Walter Filkins `08 participated in the
Yale University Physics Olympics in New Haven, CT. This was Rocky
Hill's first appearance at the competition and our team placed 22nd
out of 55 teams. We were the only team that brought freshmen students.
The Rocky Hill Math Team
went to West Warwick High School on October 25, 2006 to compete
in Rhode Island Math League. Our team tied for first place with
East Greenwich High School, and every member scored.

Hockey Coaches Association announced the All Division, Honorable
Mention and All Rookie Teams for the 2006 season. Congratulations

Tim Harsch ‘07 was honored
as a National Merit Scholar Semi-Finalist. The program recognizes
students who because of very high scores on their PSAT exam are
deemed eligible to move on to the next stage of the National Merit
Scholarship Competition. Good luck Tim!

Tilley `08 who was inducted into the National Honor Society this
week.
September
2006
Sam LeBlanc `10 received
top honors in the John Hopkins Creative and Talented Youth Search.
He had the highest SAT score in math, and was second in combined
math and verbal scores. Sam was awarded a scholarship to Salve Regina
and invited to an award ceremony at Johns Hopkins University next
week.
