Upper School English

All students in the Upper School are required to complete a summer reading assignment to prepare for his or her next English course. The names of these texts and the assignment are listed on this webpage. Students in English 12 AP must also complete additional writing assignments as noted. Students may contact Mr. Bill Fields, the English Department Chair, by e-mail (bfields@rockyhill.org ) with any questions.

In addition to the summer reading assignments, students may also be required to complete other coursework during the summer, particularly for honors level courses in the tenth through twelfth grades. This work is intended to keep our students' academic muscles fit and to prepare them for our academic program. Assignments will be posted throughout the summer.

The Rocky Hill School English Department requires you to read at least one book during the summer before the 2008-2009 school year begins. We have prepared a list of suitable works for each rising class, which are listed under Suggestions for Summer Reading in the PDF file SUMMER READING 2008. You must choose at least one personal-selection book from the appropriate list. Be prepared for an in-class writing assignment related to that book during the first week of classes. Review the text shortly before school begins to refresh your memory.

Upper School Students in English 10 Honors, English 11 Honors, or English 12 AP:

In addition to one required personal-selection book, students scheduled for English 10 Honors, English 11 Honors, or English 12 AP must read the book(s) specified under each course in the SUMMER READING 2008 document and be prepared for discussion on the first day of classes. Students entering English 12 AP must complete the assignment listed before the first day of class. Pace yourself so that you enjoy the reading and gain something meaningful from the exercise. Review the text(s) shortly before school begins to refresh your memory.
