Rocky Hill School 's Wellness Program

The mission of Rocky Hill School is to promote the development of the whole child in the pursuit of knowledge and self-awareness. We are committed to this goal. By promoting physical development, social and emotional health, and involvement in the community and environment, we help develop our students into responsible and self-aware citizens.

The aim of our Wellness Program is to provide students, in partnership with their parents, with the tools and the skills needed to make healthy and appropriate decisions. The Wellness Program is geared toward educating and guiding students to think before they act.

Rocky Hill School 's Wellness Program emphasizes three areas within our students' lives:

Physical Health, Social and Emotional Health, and Community and Environmental Health.

Physical Health

Upper School students are required to fulfill two athletic credits each year.

Sports

Students may participate on an athletic team as a player, manager, or assistant to the Athletic Department. The School offers a variety of competitive varsity and junior varsity level sports as well as several non-competitive options. Students may choose from soccer, field hockey, basketball, lacrosse, tennis, sailing and yoga.

Lifetime Fitness Program

This is a program for students who do not wish to participate on a competitive team for a season. Basic concepts of conditioning, exercise techniques, and nutrition are taught. The program meets three days a week at the Core Fitness Center in East Greenwich. There are no additional fees to participate in this program.

Drama

Students can earn an athletic credit by participating in the fall drama production and/or the winter musical.

Social and Emotional Health

Counseling

Dr. Joanna Futransky serves as the School's consulting psychologist, and spends one day per week on campus. She meets with faculty, staff, and parents from all three divisions as needed. Appointments are made on a referral basis through administrators after consultation with teachers, staff and parents.

Advisers

Each student is assigned a faculty or staff member who serves as his or her adviser. Students meet with their adviser on a daily basis. The adviser's main responsibility is to serve as an advocate for the student and to assist him/her in making healthy and appropriate choices. Along with the Head of Upper School and Dean of Student Life, an adviser supports students both academically and socially. The adviser is the primary contact person for the advisee's parents or guardians for arranging academic conferences and in the event parents or students have any questions or concerns which they wish to communicate.

Prefects

Prefects are members of the rising senior class who are elected by the Upper School faculty and appointed by the Headmaster. Selection is based on qualities of maturity, loyalty, and service to the school community. Prefects serve on the Disciplinary Committee and on an advisory committee to the Dean of Student Life, Head of Upper School, and Headmaster. Prefects also act as peer counselors for the freshman class. They are trained to counsel students and to refer students to school staff and counselors for more support when needed.

Speakers and Workshops

Throughout the school year, professionals from the wellness and healthcare fields are scheduled to run workshops for students, teachers and parents about issues affecting families.

Community and Environmental Health

Parent Teacher League (PTL)

The purpose of the PTL is to support the School in achieving its educational mission. All parents and teachers are members of the PTL, an active school support organization which sponsors social and fundraising events and academic or co-curricular programs. They coordinate volunteer activities throughout the School. The PTL provides scholarship funding, contributes to needed campus renovations and capital improvements, and supports special educational enrichment programs and opportunities.

Community Service

Community service is an important aspect of student life at Rocky Hill School. In the Upper School , each student is required to complete 30 hours of approved community service by Commencement. In addition to off-campus community service, each student is encouraged to complete on-campus volunteer work during his or her Upper School years. Students may also choose to join the School's Community Service Club, which organizes many community outreach programs for our students.

Student Leadership

There are many opportunities for students to become involved in student government. Each class has an elected president, vice president, treasurer, and secretary. Two seniors are elected each year as President and Vice President of the Upper School Student Council. Prefects are also elected as student leaders. Students gain additional leadership skills as members of the Nathan Hale Society, an organization whose members work directly with the Admission Office touring prospective families and students who visit the School. Upper School students may also volunteer for the Student Life Committee and the Health & Wellness Committee.

Student Life Committee

The Student Life Committee (SLC) works closely with the Student Council to initiate activities that will promote school spirit. The group is comprised of representatives from each class, and is advised by the Dean of Student Life. The SLC helps in the planning of Spirit Week, Founders' Day, and other community service activities and events for the School.

Chewonki Trip

All 9th and 10th grade students take part in a team-building experience at the Chewonki Foundation in the fall. Chewonki is a camp located in the mountains of Wiscasset, Maine. The mission of Chewonki is to help our students grow individually and as a community by providing educational experiences that foster an understanding and appreciation for self-reliance and teamwork. The camp emphasizes the power of focused, collective effort while connecting students to the natural world. Our students, along with Rocky Hill School faculty and leaders from Chewonki, participate in challenging activities that test them both physically and intellectually. This week-long program builds self-confidence and community spirit.

Blue and White Competition

The Blue and White Competition has been a long-standing tradition at Rocky Hill School. It is a friendly, year-long contest among all the students in the Upper School, with the purpose of building school spirit. Upon entrance into the Upper School, students are assigned to either the Blue or White team, and remain on that team during their time at Rocky Hill. The Blue and White teams each earn points throughout the year in field day events, banner contests, academic performance, involvement at athletic events, and participation in other spirit-building activities and contests. The winning team is presented with the Blue and White Trophy at the end of the school year.
