of October 27-31, 2008

Dear
Students and Families,
Spirit
Soars at Rocky Hill: In preparation for our Founders'
Day celebration, last Friday was Blue White Day throughout
the school. Lower School students enjoyed cheering on the
fourth and fifth graders in the Fall Blue White Soccer Classic
finals, which culminated the competition held during recess
throughout the last two weeks. The Blue team was victorious
this year. (In the photo below, Mrs. Wood, PE teacher, is
explaining the point tallies to all players.)The day ended
with a spirited pep rally attended by students from all three
divisions. Ask your child about the wonderful cheers that
were presented by each class!
Rocky
Hill will host the Fall Admissions Open House on Saturday,
October 25th from 10:00-12:00. Our school will be
open to prospective families who have an interest in learning
more about independent school education at Rocky Hill. Our
current parents are always our most effective way of advertising
the quality of a Rocky Hill education. If you know of any
families who would like to know more about our school, please
encourage them to attend Saturday's event!
Halloween,
Friday, October 31st: During the morning, all LS
students will have a chance to participate in the Healthy
Haunted House a spooky obstacle course designed
to help students continue to be physically fit. The
afternoon's festivities will begin with the LS community parading
in costume around the campus. Our parade will end in the Campbell
Center where students will gather to hear storyteller, Mr.
Marc Binder, who will share his Halloween folklore. After
the performance, students will return to the classrooms for
some Halloween treats to end the day.
Costume
Parade: Students are asked to bring their costumes
to school in a large bag. Our morning academic schedule will
continue as usual and students will dress for the parade
beginning at 1:00 PM. Please be sure that all costumes
are labeled with your child's name. Gory masks and weapons
should not be brought to school. Parents, please feel free
to join in the festivities by dressing up in YOUR favorite
costume. Questions? Please contact the classroom teacher.
The
upcoming elections are on the minds of everyone
and students in the Lower School are no exception. In morning
assembly and in classrooms, the candidates, the electoral
process and the national issues at hand, are topics of discussion.
We will be conducting our own Election Day poll in
the Lower School to give students an opportunity
to cast their own votes. We will keep you posted on the outcomes.

historic election at home, try this site: www.timeforkids.com/TFK/election08/
A
treasured Lower School tradition, GrandFriends' Day
on Tuesday, November 25th is fast approaching. Each
year, students invite a special grandparent or grand friend
to school on November 25th for a morning of classroom activities
and music. Our students look forward to sharing their school
life with these special friends. Invitations will be mailed
this week. If you have not provided addresses for your child's
Grand Friends, please contact Mrs. Barbara Feingold ( bfeingold@rockyhill.org
) in the Development office ASAP. We don't want to leave
anyone out!
The
next Lower School/Middle School PTL meeting
will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 28th at 8:15 AM
in the Campbell Center. We encourage all parents to attend.
Parent
Conference Day is Thursday, Nov. 6th. There are no
classes scheduled for this day in order that teachers have
time to confer with all parents about student progress for
the first quarter. Teachers will be making appointments this
coming week. If you find you have a conflict, please contact
the teacher. Special subject teachers are also available to
conference with parents on this day.
Preschool
teachers Mike Lawson and Dianne Blevons traveled to Hartford,
Connecticut this week to attend a workshop on the handwriting
program, Handwriting Without Tears,
which has been adopted in the Preschool through Second grade
classes.
Veterans
Day: We are in the process of organizing our Veterans
Day observance for Lower and Middle Schools and would like
to extend an invitation to any member of our school family
who is a veteran or a current member of our country's armed
forces to join us Monday, November 10th at 11:15 AM. The ceremony
will last approximately 25 minutes. Please contact Mr. Ted
MacDonald at tmacdonald@rockyhill.org
if your child has an interested guest.
The
Secret Lives of Box Tops: Did you know there are
Box Tops hiding on the bottom of some of your Kleenex boxes
as well as on the side of the plastic packaging for Cottonelle
toilet paper? These guys are sneaky, so keep a lookout for
them! For a complete list of participating products, visit
http://www.boxtops4education.com/AboutBoxTops/Products.aspx.
If you have any questions or know of other secret hiding places
