Lower School News

Week of September 22-26, 2008

Dear Students and Families,

•  We were thrilled to see so many parents at this week's Night in School for grades K-5 . There was great excitement when children arrived to school the next day to read their letters from you.

•  Preschool parents , we look forward to Preschool Day in School scheduled for Wednesday, October 1 st at 4:30 PM . At that time, the Preschool teachers will share the program goals with you.

• Afterschool Classes : Afterschool Enrichment Programs begin next week. There are still a few openings in Karate, Yoga (Gr. K-2) and Chinese Culture. Unfortunately, Chess Club and Soccer are full this time around. We will offer a second round of afterschool activities for the winter.

•  Our regular Extended Day program offers a variety of fun activities for our students everyday. There is “Lego Monday”, “Games night Tuesday”, “Cooking on Wednesday” (always popular), “Crafty Thursday” and “Friday night at the movies”. Questions? Please contact "Miss Kathy" at kmajkut@rockyhill.org Come join the fun!

•  New and Better! The Better Learning Center is now ACE – the Academic Enrichment Center. Located in the Faculty House, ACE offers enrichment and tutorial support to students of all grades.

•  Congratulations to Mrs. Mary Wright, fifth grade co-teacher, who recently learned that she has been selected to receive this year's New England Conference on Gifted and Talented Award for Teaching. This award is granted to those persons who have exhibited outstanding effort in attempting to make a difference in the lives of gifted students in the New England area. Mary will be recognized at the NEG&T conference in October.

•  Thursday, September 25 th is Photo Day for all Lower School students. E G Photo will be taking individual and class photos of all RHS students.

•  PTL Welcome ! The Rocky Hill PTL is hosting a fall Welcome Reception for all parents, faculty and staff to begin the new school year on Thursday, September 25 th from 6:00-8:00 pm in the Campbell Center . We look forward to seeing all of our parents at this fun event.

•  Boxtops for Education /Target Double Time: Time to turn in your summer stash of Box Tops. Right now, for every 30 Box Tops we submit, Target will give the school another 30 for free!! Please place your tops in the big, hot pink drop off box in the Lower School lobby or in receptacles in Hopelands or the PreSchool. It helps if Boxtops could be submitted in an envelope or zip lock bag so we don't lose any. Questions? Please contact Tracie Seed, Dakota (Gr. 4) and Audrey's (Gr. 1) mom at tracie_seed@yahoo.com or 884-2911. Your help with this program adds up quickly and the Lower School is the beneficiary. Last year's collection totaled $480. With that money we were able to buy new IPODS for the Lower School reading program. Watch for more information about this exciting new program.

•  Are you ready? A fabulous tradition has emerged at RHS and all are looking forward to the 10 th Annual Fall Classic Golf and Tennis Tournaments & Dinner Auction on Monday, September 22 nd at the Potowomut Golf Club. If you cannot join us for golf or tennis, we hope that you will not miss the evening dinner and auction, which is always a lively event. Please contact Trish Walcott at ext. 199 for more information. All proceeds benefit the development of a Visual Arts Center , Financial Aid & Community Service programs. See you there!

•  In preparation for the Fall Classic, Lower School students painted special pieces of furniture which will be part of the live auction. Come to the auction and bid on your child's class creation. Wouldn't he/she be thrilled to have this class project as a special keepsake?
