Background

I have extensive experience teaching mathematics in diverse settings which range from the traditional to alternative. In addition to Rocky Hill School, these schools include School One in Providence, Rhode Island; St. Xavier Academy in Providence and Coventry, Rhode Island; Narragansett High School, in Narragansett, Rhode Island; and St. Thomas' High School in
Lautoka, Fiji.

Philosphy of Education

The primary purpose of education is to prepare students to become active members of society. To that end, each student must be equipped with solid skills in mathematics, science and the humanities; he/she must understand his/her rights and responsibilities as a citizen of the world; and, most importantly, he/she must become a life-long learner.

For me, these objectives have remained unchanged since I first entered the classroom as a teacher thirty years ago. Many of the tools which are available have changed radically (no more slide rules!), and yet, ultimately, the most powerful tool remains constant – a learning environment where all participants are treated with respect and dignity. This fosters an atmosphere in which students are safe to take risks and to stretch their minds. Although my subject is mathematics, I am first and foremost a teacher of students.

Interests, Activities and Plans

I have two passions, mathematics and music, and am fortunate to have the opportunity to pursue both. Having studied voice for several years, I have sung in a church choir since 1965. In 1997, our choir had the privilege of singing for Pope John Paul II during a private audience at the Vatican . I have also recently become an avid Sudoku fan.

On a Personal Note

While serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in Lautoka , Fiji , I met my husband, Conrad. We have lived in Rhode Island since returning from the South Pacific and have two sons. Nicholas graduated from Rocky Hill School in 2003 and is now a student at Saint Michael's College in Winooski , VT. Christopher is a member of the Class of 2007 at Rocky Hill.
