Interests
and Activities
I
am an avid sailor, having logged over 15,000 miles at sea competing
in such events as the Newport – Bermuda Race, Marblehead – Halifax
Race , Miami – Montego Bay Race, and numerous regattas around
the country. I also enjoy traveling, tennis, and have just started
playing golf.
Educational
Philosophy
I'm
an educator first, and a “techie” second. Having taught children
for almost 25 years, first as a sailing instructor, then through
my work at a children's psychiatric hospital and now as a teacher,
I have come to understand the importance of helping children learn
to learn. It is not simply filling them with facts and hoping
that they can retrieve a trivial piece of knowledge at an opportune
time. It is helping them to find ways to connect their world with
past events, and future possibilities. Technology is a tool that
can assist in making this happen. It is also an extremely powerful
tool that has dramatically changed the way teachers teach, students
learn, and how the world functions. Anyone can learn to click
a mouse or strike a key, understanding the power that these simple
acts can yield is the goal in technology education. I feel that
my role as an educator is to help students fully realize the potential
and the power that technology provides.
