Education:
AFFILIATIONS
Background:
Philosophy
of Education:
- An outstanding education is a gift, and those to whom this gift
is afforded have a responsibility to their own learning. The lessons
and values of a classical education in this generation are vital,
and they provide insight into some of life's most fundamental
challenges. However, an education is not successful if it has
only addressed the pursuits of the mind. Rather, the most successful
education is that which addresses, with equal attention, both
the intellectual and the moral dimensions of human nature. The
teacher is charged with reinforcing these ideals. The ancient
Roman author, Quintilian, says of the teacher, "The teacher
should be strict but not severe, genial but not familiar. He must
control his anger, making continuous but not extravagant demands
on his class, and probe with questions those who sit in silence
in the hope of escaping his eye." It is my goal to instill
in each of my students the love for and the pursuit of education
for education's sake.
Interests
and Activities:
- I played four years
of college baseball at Vassar, and I enjoy all sports, most notably
baseball and football. I enjoy nature and am an avid bird watcher,
mountain biker, kayaker, and hiker. I have done and continue to
do regular work as a professional church organist and blues guitarist.
On
a Personal Note
- I am a native New
Yorker and have recently moved to Rhode Island from New York City
with my wife Tara. We live in East Greenwich with Argos,
our dog, Elvis, our Bearded Dragon, and Bubo, Athena, Strix, X,
and Harpy, our resident family of Eastern Screech Owls.
