Then
and Now:
Let
it be stated from the outset: I love small states and schools
whose names include the word "hill."
Born
and raised in Delaware, I now reside in Rhode Island
having arrived here by way of Northampton, MA; New York City; Geneva,
Switzerland; and Bolton, MA. While growing up in Delaware, I had
the good fortune to attend Tower
Hill School, truly a watershed period in my life. My parents
placed a high value on good education; I was the beneficiary of
their foresight and their sacrifice. Now I teach at Rocky Hill
School where families not unlike my own, way back then, seek
the best for their children.
For
me, at Tower Hill, it was a magical time, a time of innocence mixed
with discovery and growth. I felt safe, I knew what was expected
of me, but most importantly I learned to love learning. Those teachers
remain with me. Their influence has outlived most of them: to this
day I am able to recite the prologue to the Canterbury Tales (in
Old English!), as well as John Masefield's "Sea Fever." I still
diagram difficult sentences in my head to be certain they are grammatically
correct. Their legacy, however, extends beyond these skills of somewhat
dubious value. They helped me develop tools for a lifetime, they
taught me to believe in myself and they encouraged me to reach.
Here at Rocky Hill,
I have the opportunity to keep the continuum alive, that of teachers
working with and for students and of students discovering that the
process of learning, while requiring hard work, is as rewarding
as the learning itself.
And,
we have fun, too!!
Some
Memorable Moments:
-
At
Tower Hill, as one of many student voices from schools in the
Greater Philadelphia area singing with the Philadelphia Orchestra
- I believe it was Finlandia by Sibelius.
-
At
Rocky Hill, as one of seven chaperones who accompanied the sophomore
class on a four day trip aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Barque
EAGLE from New London to Baltimore (see photograph at
the top of the page).
-
Anytime
with my family.
