Mr. Laurent’s fourth grade class has worked over the school year on an impressive PBL project that aimed to answer the driving question, “How can we, as historians and caretakers of history, help Smith’s Castle become better known?” The team engage in meaningful research, hands-on projects, collaboration, and creative problem solving to deliver an impressive project that they will never forget. The class built a website outlining their impressive PBL project: Mr. L’s Fourth Grade Historians
They also garnered quite a bit of media attention! In early November, the students visited the Rhode Island State Archives as part of their project. A reporter from RI Public Radio tagged along and filed a story. In January, they shared a public reflection of their collaboration with Smith’s Castle and The Cocumscussoc Association, which focused on bringing more attention to the important historical North Kingstown site. The students presented to parents, faculty, and administrators a reflection of their process of researching, collaborating, and creating authentic deliverables to Smith’s Castle and the Cocumscussoc Association, including a website, interactive exhibits, and a news article. The story was picked up by the Independent.
