Any school, no matter how beautiful the setting, is only as good as the people who compose it. As you walk through campus, you’ll meet students and teachers invested in learning. It may sound cliché to say that Rocky Hill is a family-oriented school, but it’s true. Our faculty is privileged to teach small classes, offering them ample opportunity to work with students individually, in small groups, or as a whole. We know our students in multiple settings and through a myriad of lenses, which allows us to challenge every student individually, resulting in opportunities for growth simply not found elsewhere. Students at all levels take advantage of this unparalleled access to their faculty—in the classroom, on the athletic fields, through music, in the art studios, and on stage.
Twenty-three years ago, I began a life in education, first teaching in middle and upper schools, then as a professor at colleges and universities, and finally as a university administrator. When I chose to become the eighth head of Rocky Hill School in July of 2011, it was in part to fulfill a dream of heading an independent school. More essential, however, was knowing that our three boys would receive an outstanding education in a community that values diversity, integrity, and curiosity, all while imbuing ethical thought and action. To me, Rocky Hill felt like—and feels like—home.
If you’re a prospective family, an alumnus, or just want to find out more about this incredible School, spend some time on our website, and then come visit. I will be hosting
Head of School Coffee sessions on several Wednesday mornings between now and March 7. Join me in the Hopelands Living room for a casual conversation about 21st Century education and what that means at Rocky Hill.
I also urge you to walk the campus, attend a sports game or take in a concert, and talk with students and teachers. Learn about some of our new initiatives, including our
Garden Classroom, and be sure to stop by my office (or, more likely, track me down in a Lower School classroom, on the waterfront with a Middle School science class, or watching a field hockey practice). I look forward to meeting you.
With warm regards,
Jon Schoenwald
