What is the Annual Fund?

The Annual Fund supports everything that happens at Rocky Hill School: faculty salaries, academic programs in every division, classroom equipment, athletic equipment and uniforms, arts and music, technology hardware and software, library books, films, periodicals, facilities maintenance, electricity, class trips, transportation.

The Annual Fund provides members of our community of parents, alumni, faculty, grandparents and other friends the opportunity to make a tax-deductible contribution to support the great teaching and learning that occurs here every single day.

I really think tuition is enough. Why do I need to do more?

Tuition covers about 85% of our costs to operate the school each year. That fact creates a short fall in income that must be made up in other ways. Like all independent schools, or non-profits for that matter, we do not rely solely on tuition income to balance our budget. To do so, would put unreasonable financial strain on parents, and our school community would not reflect the social, economic and cultural diversity that we value. As an independent school, we do not receive any significant support from federal and state grants or apportionments and we therefore seek the support of foundations and the alumni, parents, trustees, friends, faculty and staff of the school to help bridge the gap between operational costs and tuition income.

When I give, how much should I give?

There is no formula for giving. Last year, Annual Fund contributions from members of the School community ranged from $1 to $20,000. We encourage donors to make a gift that is as generous as it can be and one that reflects the level of their commitment and means. As a way to give more, many donors opt to pay a pledge in installments. A $100 monthly gift quickly adds up to a significant contribution. The Development Office can set-up automatic payments or send monthly reminders. A recurring gift can be designated on the gift envelope or in the Online Giving form. Always remember, participation, regardless of the gift size, is very important and greatly appreciated.

Are my contributions tax deductible?

Absolutely. Rocky Hill School is a non-profit charitable organization (Fed tax ID# 050277258). All gifts are acknowledged and are tax-deductible in accordance with IRS regulations.

Does Rocky Hill School receive local and federal education funds?

Unlike Rhode Island public or charter schools, independent schools like Rocky Hill School do not receive subsidies or allocations per student. On average RI communities receive approximately 10% of their revenue from state and federal sources to support general education expenditures of nearly $8,000 per student. We do receive a small amount annually in reimbursements for faculty professional development, library materials and school psychologist under Title II, IV, and VII.

How do corporate matching gifts work?

Many corporations have a matching gift program available to their employees. These programs often apply to retirees as well. Ranging from giving dollar for dollar, to even more, these programs are very important to non-profits like Rocky Hill School. Ask your employer, or your spouse's employer, if they have such a program, and if you qualify, then name Rocky Hill School as a beneficiary. This is a great way to maximize your personal contribution.
