Academic Center for Enrichment

10 Points of Distinction

The Academic Center for Enrichment serves students who have a learning difference and the need for additional support. ACE's goal is to provide a supportive environment which helps students reach their learning potential.

The Academic Support Program provides conceptual support and study skills which are suited to the individual student's learning style. The Academic Support Program provides classes which meet one to three times a week, depending upon each student's individual need. During the classes, study and organizational skills are applied to the student's course work. Monitoring of student progress is accomplished through regular communication with the faculty and between the faculty, student and family. Reflecting the Rocky Hill mission, the goal of the Academic Support Program is to enroll students for a maximum of one year per division. The expectation is that students will engage in applying the skills to their course work while in ACE, and then continue to do so once they exit the program.

The Tutorial Program strengthens basic skills such as reading, writing, grammar, comprehension, spelling, and reasoning. The goal of these sessions is for the student to advance to grade-level proficiency in the skills in which he or she may be deficient.

Although not limited to students who have learning differences, the Academic Center for Enrichment accommodates children with these differences within the context of the programs outlined above. Classroom modifications appropriate to each individual student are recommended by the ACE Learning Specialist and are implemented by individual classroom teachers. Informal assessment is provided through the Academic Center for Enrichment when other information is not available as a way of screening candidates for the program, or to determine if an outside evaluation is needed. This service is available for students in Kindergarten through Grade 12.

An area of continued focus for the ACE and ESL programs is empowering students to use strategies and tools to help them compensate for their learning issues or language deficits and advance their strengths in order to best prepare them for college and beyond. The new assistive technology center in ACE, funded by the Celebration by the Bay event, provides dedicated technical devices and software that enables our faculty to maximize instructional time and minimize distractions using tools whose features are engaging and collaborative in nature. The center is equipped with an HP Touchsmart 9300 Elite PC and SMART Board coupled with powerful software used for teaching and assessing students. The center has opened up new doors for many students and provides faculty with an appropriate space to perform comprehensive assessments and offer engaging instruction for students in all divisions.
