We know that the middle school years are a time of change, exploration, and discovery, marked not only by rapid physical growth, but also by accelerated social, emotional and intellectual development. As we work with our students each day, we recognize what a truly wonderful and meaningful time this can be.
Today’s students struggle more than ever to define themselves in the face of intense peer pressure and the increasing influence of pop culture. We offer families the opportunity to be part of a structured and nurturing community that cares about the intellectual and social development of each child.
Our small class sizes, dedicated faculty, emphasis on moral and ethical development, and understanding of the unique formative needs of the middle school child sets us apart as an outstanding Middle School. Our teachers serve as advisers, role models, and coaches, building strong relationships with their students. Through frequent communication with parents and students, teachers and advisers become an important resource for families, working together as partners in each student’s education and personal growth.
Rocky Hill’s Middle School is committed to the development of the whole child: mind, body and spirit.
In today's world, we see Middle School education as having four areas of focus: Knowledge, Problem Solving/Critical Thinking, Communication and Respect. A student who performs successfully in these areas will possess a powerful set of learning skills and communication techniques with which to enter the Upper School.
Knowledge—This refers to a core of material and skills that each student will be exposed to and expected to master. Included in this is grammar, mathematical concepts, certain historical and scientific information, research and study skills.
Problem Solving/Critical Thinking—Students will be given opportunities to apply their knowledge in problem solving situations. They will be forced to make connections in order to satisfactorily solve each challenge. Often drawing on what they have learned in different disciplines, these challenges will require thought, perseverance, and organization. In many instances, they may also call for teamwork, creativity, research, experimentation, and the use of technology.
Communication—An important component of learning is the effective communication of one's ideas. In the Middle School there will be a strong emphasis placed on the presentation of ideas. This may take many forms, such as written, artistic expression, computer and multimedia simulation, and verbal. There will be training in public speaking, debate, as well as composition.
Respect—The behavioral guidelines for the Middle School, as with the rest of the school, are centered around respect. Students will be reminded of, or taught the need to be respectful of one another, of the school and its ideas and principals, and of one's self.
