PRUDENCE AND PATIENCE ISLANDS
Prudence and Patience Islands are located approximately 2 miles from the mouth of the Potowomut River. These islands offer a variety of environments including salt marshes, woodlands, and rocky shorelines, each of which will be a site of study by the 8th grade. The students will begin with an exploration of the islands with an eye to the geologic history of Narragansett Bay, as well as the cultural history and land use of the site. As with the other groups, the 8th grade will conduct various biota surveys, both marine and terrestrial, as well as a look at several historical sites on the island. Some of this surveying will involve snorkeling in the "Narrows", which is the cut that separates the two islands. It will also involve the training and use of sea kayaks, which will be one of the highlights of the week. Currently we are planning on spending 2 successive nights camped on the island.
