SANDY POINT SALT MARSH

The Sandy Point Salt Marsh is located at the eastern edge of the Rocky Hill campus. It is an exceptionally large salt marsh cut by a network of drainage channels, and due to its somewhat secluded location, home to a variety of water fowl and other wildlife. The 6th grade will spend time mapping the marsh and surveying the flora and fauna of the site. This survey will serve as a baseline for monitoring changes in the marsh in future years. Using canoes, students will get the opportunity to travel into the marsh shallows and observe the wildlife up close and undisturbed. The week will also include an overnight camp-out on the beach with an astronomy lesson that evening. Throughout the week, the students will participate in Project Adventure style games and initiatives which build teamwork and communication skills. A strong emphasis is also placed on journal writing.
